Shazam! Captain Marvel is heading to the big screen.

"Geoff and I are in the thick of it, creating a kickass update that still honors the lore that's been created in over 50 years of [Captain] Marvel storylines," said Birch, one of the co-writers for the screenplay Shazam!, the other writer is fan-favorite comic scribe Geoff Johns.  Peter Segal is still attach to direct the WB adaptation of the comic series.

Shazam! revolves around a teenager, Billy Batson, who was chosen as a champion by the wizard Shazam.  When Billy shouts the name of the wizard he transforms into the World's Mightiest Mortal - Captain Marvel.

Birch is fascinated by the simple wish fulfillment that the story provides, a kid just shouts a magic word and Shazam! he becomes a superhero.  That aspect will be central theme on the script.

The film may end up with a PG-13 rating, the writer added that it might not be as dark as the Dark Knight but definitely this will be cool.

"Tonally I think it's important to successfully find the balance of comedy and danger in the story. That's a major aspect I'm focusing on. Frankly hitting the right tone is what's going to either get this made or keep it in development hell."

No actors are yet attached for the movie but Dwayne Johnson as Captain Marvel may still be in the running.  The role of Billy Batson may go to an unknown.  The writer did point out that he had envisioned Ryan Reynolds to play Captain Marvel but seeing that Reynolds is already set to play Green Lantern, it seems like that will not be happening.
