Kirk Alyn as Superman

1.] Superman (1948, 15 part serial)

Stars an uncredited Kirk Alyn. It is notable as the first live-action appearance of Superman on film and for the longevity of its distribution. It was originally screened at movie matinées and after the first three scene-setting chapters, every episode ends in a cliffhanger. The Superman-in-flight scenes are animations, in part due to the small production budget.

Plot synopsis:
The story centers upon the hero and the nefarious Spider Lady, who is trying to rule the Earth. If she cannot have complete control, she plans on shrinking it with her powerful reducer ray. Much of the episodes center upon Superman's relationship with Lois Lane and upon his ability to fly.

2.] Atom Man vs. Superman (1950, 15 part serial)

Plot synopsis:
Lex Luthor (the Atom Man), invents a deadly amount of devices to plague the city, including a disintegrating machine which can convert people in to their basic atoms and reassemble them in another place. However Superman manages to thwart each scheme.

George Reeves as Superman

3.] Superman and the Mole Men (1951, feature film)

Superman and the Mole Men is a 1951 black and white film starring George Reeves as Superman. It was the first theatrical feature film based on the Superman characters. It was shot in 12 days on a studio backlot. Fifty-eight minutes long, it served as a trial run for the syndicated TV series Adventures of Superman, for which it became a two-part episode titled "The Unknown People".

Plot synopsis:
Reporters Clark Kent and Lois Lane are sent to the small town of Silsby for the inauguration of the world's deepest oil well. Unbeknownst to the drillers, however, the drill shaft has penetrated the underground home of the "Mole Men", a race of small, furry (though bald-headed) beings. The Mole Men come up through the shaft at night to explore the surface.

4.] Adventures of Superman (1952-1958, TV series)

The show is the first television series to feature Superman and began filming in 1951 in California. The show's first two seasons (episodes 1–52, 26 titles per season) were filmed in black-and-white; seasons three through six (episodes 53–104, 13 titles per season) were filmed in color but originally telecast monochromatically both on the ABC network and in first-run syndication.

John Rockwell as Superboy

5.] Adventures of Superboy (1961, unaired pilot)

The Adventures of Superboy was a proposed TV series that was put into production in 1961. It was meant to capitalize on the success of Adventures of Superman, which was cancelled years earlier. A revival was planned, but abandoned following the death of George Reeves, but only a pilot episode, "Rajah's Ransom", was produced. It featured the first non-comic book portrayals ever of Superboy.

David Wilson as Superman

6.] It's A Bird, It's A Plane, It's Superman (1975, Televised production of the Broadway play)

"It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman" was made into a TV special on February 1, 1975. The show was significantly shortened, and the ethnicity of a troupe of evildoers was changed from Chinese acrobats to Mafia-style gangsters. The show was broadcast on the ABC network under its Wide World of Entertainment late-night umbrella title to poor critical reception. It starred David Wilson as Superman/Clark Kent.

Christopher Reeve as Superman

7.] Superman, The Movie (1978)

Superman: The Movie is a 1978 superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Richard Donner directed the film, which stars Christopher Reeve as Superman. The film depicts the origin of Superman, from infancy as Kal-El of Krypton and growing up in Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered attitude in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane, while battling the villainous Lex Luthor.

8.] Superman II (1981)

Superman II is the 1980 sequel to the 1978 superhero film Superman. It was the only Superman film to be filmed by two directors. For this reason, the film is surrounded with controversy since original director Richard Donner had completed, by his estimation, roughly 75% of the movie in 1977 before being taken off the project. Many of the scenes shot by second director Richard Lester in 1979 are refilmed Donner sequences.

9.] Superman III (1983)

Superman III is a 1983 superhero film and the third film in the Superman film series based upon the long-running DC Comics superhero. The film was the last Reeve/Superman film produced by Alexander Salkind and Ilya Salkind.

10.] Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is a 1987 superhero film, the last of the Superman theatrical movies starring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. In this film, Superman battles Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) and his creation, a solar-powered evil clone of Superman called Nuclear Man.

John Haymes Newton as Superboy

Gerard Christopher as Superboy

11.] Superboy (1988-1992, TV series)

Superboy was a half-hour live-action television series based on the fictional DC Comics comic book character Kal-El's early years as Superboy. The show ran from 1988–1992 in syndication. It was renamed The Adventures of Superboy at the start of the third season. John Haymens Newton played Superboy on the 1st season of the show and on the last three season Superboy wa played by Gerard Christopher.

Dean Cain as Superman

12.] Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997, TV series)

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman is a live-action American television series based on the Superman comic books. Lois & Clark aired on ABC from September 12, 1993 to June 14, 1997, and starred Dean Cain as Superman/Clark Kent. The series loosely follows the comic philosophy of writer John Byrne with Clark Kent as the true personality, and Superman as a secondary disguise. As the show's title suggests, it focuses as much on the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane as on the adventures of Clark's alter-ego.

Brandon Routh as Superman

13.] Superman Returns (2006)

Superman Returns is a 2006 superhero film based on the DC Comics character Superman. Directed by Bryan Singer, the film stars Brandon Routh as Superman. It is a sequel to Superman (1978) and, to a lesser extent, Superman II (1980), and ignores the events of the two previous installments in the Superman film series –– Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). The film tells the story of the title character returning to Earth after several years of absence. He finds that his love interest Lois Lane has moved on with her life, and that his archenemy Lex Luthor is plotting a scheme that will destroy the United States.

Tom Welling as Clark Kent

14.] Smallville (2001-2011, TV series)

The first four seasons focused on Clark and his friends' high school years. Since season five, the show has ventured into more adult settings, eventually focusing on his career at the Daily Planet, as well as introducing other DC comic book superheroes and villains.

From Comic Book to Smallville

From Comic Book to Smallville

It is Smallville’s last season whether you loved the show or loathe it; the series has breathed life to many of our DC comicbook characters.  Here is a picture rundown of characters that transitioned from the colorful 2D pages of our comicbooks to Smallville’s small screen.

Clark Kent : Tom Welling

1st Smallville appearance: Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot

Born as Kal-El on the planet Krypton to Jor-El and Lara-El, Clark Kent is a super-powered alien who was sent to Earth after his planet was about to be destroyed, and has devoted his life to fighting crime, protecting humanity and the Earth. Accompanied by a meteor shower, Kal-El's ship crashed in a field of the small town of Smallville, Kansas, where he was found and adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent, who raised him as his son, instilling in him strong moral principles and teaching him to use his abilities for good.

In the comics, Clark Kent/Superman was the first character of the superhero genre, as well as the first superhero to maintain the concept of a secret identity. Although the creators of Smallville keep the spirit of the character intact, there are notable differences between the character depicted on Smallville, and the character as he appears in monthly publications.

Jonathan Kent : John Schneider

1st Smallville appearance: Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot

Jonathan Kent was the husband of Martha Kent and the adoptive father of Clark Kent, and ran the Kent Farm. Jonathan died of heart failure the night he was elected Kansas State Senator.

The differences between Jonathan's character on Smallville and how he is in the source material are relatively few; the main one being that the TV version is much younger.

Martha Kent : Annette O'Toole

1st Smallville appearance: Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot

Martha Kent (nee Clark) is the widow of the late Jonathan Kent, adoptive mother of Clark Kent, and US Senator for the state of Kansas. She is also known as the Red Queen.

In the comics, Martha Clark Kent and Jonathan Kent, also known as Ma and Pa Kent, are fictional characters published by DC Comics. The Kent’s are the adoptive parents of Superman. They live in the small town of Smallville, USA. The couple is usually portrayed age-wise as either late middle age or elderly.

Lana Lang : Kristin Kreuk

1st Smallville appearance: Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot

Lana Lang is Clark Kent's first love and Lex Luthor's ex-wife. She founded the Isis Foundation, a non-profit devoted to helping meteor-infected metahumans, and led the renovation of the Talon coffee shop. Growing up, Lana lived a mile away from the Kent’s and was admired from afar by her neighbor Clark Kent for years.

In the comics, Traditionally, Lana has been Superman's romantic interest when she was the "girl next door" in Smallville.

Lex Luthor : Michael Rosenbaum

1st Smallville appearance: Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot

Alexander "Lex" Luthor was the billionaire CEO of LuthorCorp until his death in 2009. He struggled with a dark history and a darker destiny.

In the comics, Lex Luthor has been Superman's archenemy for most of the superhero's existence, having been envisioned as his dual opposite; morally depraved and relying on intellect over strength. Luthor is a wealthy scientist and formerly a CEO of one of the most powerful high-tech conglomerates in the world, LexCorp.

Lionel Luthor : John Glover

1st Smallville appearance: Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot

Lionel Luthor  was the founder of LuthorCorp, the father of Lex Luthor and the emissary of Jor-El. He was also a member of Veritas. Prior to his death, Lionel served as Chairman and CEO, then as Special Advisor, of LuthorCorp.

Lionel has not had as major a role in the comic books as on the show itself.

Pete Ross : Sam Jones III

1st Smallville appearance: Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot

Clark Kent's and Chloe Sullivan's childhood best friend.

In the Silver Age comics, Pete Ross knew that Clark Kent was Superboy, but Superboy did not tell him, and Superboy did not know that Pete knew his secret.  The Post-Crisis Pete Ross had no knowledge of Clark's powers, but was one of his closest friends during their childhood.

Chloe Sullivan : Allison Mack

1st Smallville appearance: Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot

Chloe Anne Sullivan is Clark Kent's closest friend and the head of Watchtower, where she provides operational support to Clark and Oliver and their team of heroes. Previously, Chloe worked for a few years as a struggling basement reporter for the Daily Planet, and then managed the Isis Foundation.

The comic version of Chloe has been described as "a very successful and dedicated reporter and a major player in Metropolis".

Maggie Sawyer : Jill Teed

1st Smallville appearance: Season 2 Episode 33 - Insurgence

Captain Maggie Sawyer is a police officer for the Metropolis Police Department.

In the comics, the character of Maggie Sawyer appears in both Batman and Superman comics. She was introduced in 1987 as a captain in the Special Crimes Unit (SCU).

Morgan Edge : Rutger Hauer

1st Smallville appearance: Season 3 Episode 45 - Exile

Morgan Edge was the leading crime lord in Metropolis and a childhood friend of Lionel Luthor.

In the comics, he is the Former head of Galaxy Communications and leader of the criminal group Intergang, which received alien technological assistance from Darkseid. Edge's criminal career was exposed by reporters Cat Grant, Clark Kent, and Lois Lane.

Perry White : Michael McKean

1st Smallville appearance: Season 3 Episode 49 - Perry

Perry "Bulldog" White is a reporter for the Daily Planet.

In the comics, Perry White is the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet who hires Clark Kent when he arrives in Metropolis. His star reporter is Lois Lane, who idealized Perry's mythic reporting reputation from a young age. White was impressed with Clark's ability to scoop Lois on the paper's first story introducing Superman to the city.

Claire Foster : Lorena Gale

1st Smallville appearance: Season 3 Episode 49 - Perry

Claire Foster was the renowned psychiatrist with whom Lex Luthor scheduled his insurance-mandated sessions.

In the comics, Claire Foster has been a psychiatrist to both Superman and John Jones.

Lois Lane : Erica Durance

1st Smallville appearance: Season 4 Episode 67 - Crusade

Lois Lane is a rising journalist working for the Daily Planet and the bold, outspoken, older cousin of Chloe Sullivan. She has worked a variety of jobs over the years: waitress at the Talon, campaign manager for Jonathan Kent when he ran for Kansas State Senator, chief of staff for State Senator Martha Kent, and reporter for the Metropolis Inquisitor.

Lois is Clark Kent/Superman's chief romantic interest and, in the current DC Comics continuity, his wife.

Dr. Bridgette Crosby : Margot Kidder

1st Smallville appearance: Season 4 Episode 67 - Crusade

Dr. Bridgette Crosby was the emissary assistant of Dr. Virgil Swann and was a member of the Veritas Society.

When Superman had cancer Action Comics #777 (May 2001), Bridgette Crosby, a scientist at S.T.A.R. Labs, shrunk down Superman's allies Steel, Supergirl, and Superboy to go inside him and destroy the cancer tumor.

Sam Lane : Michael Ironside

1st Smallville appearance: Season 4 Episode 68 - Gone

Samuel "Sam" Lane is a General in the US Army, and the father of Lois Lane and Lucy Lane.

In the comics, like in Smallville, General Sam Lane is a career army officer, who married Ella Lane, and had two daughters, Lois and Lucy. Unlike Smallville however, Lois has never had as close of a relationship with Sam as she has with in the show.

Bart Allen/Impulse : Kyle Gallner

1st Smallville appearance: Season 4 Episode 71 - Run

Bart Allen is a superhuman teen with the power of super speed. He is a member of Oliver Queen's team of pro-active heroes under the codename: Impulse.

The version of Bart Allen that is portrayed in Smallville is noticeably different from the character in the comics. For Smallville, the character has an almost obnoxious sense of humor. This is a character trait of Bart during his time as Impulse, but is toned down considerably when he becomes Kid Flash, and later, The Flash, in other venues.

Mikhail Mxyzptlk : Trent Ford

1st Smallville appearance: Season 4 Episode 73 - Jinx

Mikhail Mxyzptlk is a teenaged metahuman from the Balkans who has the ability to influence others' actions with vocal commands.

In the comics, Mxyzptlk was one of Superman's few enemies that don’t need kryptonite to defeat him. Mister Mxyzptlk was an imp from the fifth dimension. Not being bound by our physical laws, he could do things that seemed to be magical, but saying or writing his name backwards returned him to his own universe.

Lucy Lane : Peyton List

1st Smallville appearance: Season 4 Episode 82 - Lucy

Lucy Lane is the trouble-making, younger sister of Lois Lane.

In the most recent issue of Supergirl, she is unmasked by Kara and revealed the evil Superwoman who had been battling against Supergirl she gained the appearance of Kryptonian powers via a powered up costume. Lucy seemed to have died in battle against Supergirl. Lucy was brought back to life in Supergirl Annual #1 due to the magical energies of her Superwoman suit. She was found by her father in Supergirl 50.

Aethyr : Alana De La Garza

Nam-Ek : Leonard Roberts

1st Smallville appearance: Season 5 Episode 89 - Arrival

The Disciples of Zod were two Kryptonians loyal to General Zod. They arrived on Earth in the Black Ship during the 2005 meteor shower, intent on finding Clark Kent and forcing him to free Zod from the Phantom Zone.

The names Nam-Ek and Aethyr appear in the comics, but are used for characters with no connection to those that appear in Smallville.
Nam-Ek is the name of a scientist who killed a sacred beast with a horn reputed to have healing powers. He then grafted the horn onto himself to gain immortality. Unfortunately this had the side effect of transforming him into a half-man/half-beast.
Aethyr is the name of a powerful entity connected with the Phantom Zone.

Brainiac : James Marsters

1st Smallville appearance: Season 5 Episode 89 - Arrival

The Brain InterActive Construct, or Brainiac, is a Kryptonian artificial intelligence designed and built by the scientists Dax-Ur and later Jor-El to aid in the war against General Zod, but was corrupted by Zod and used to assist in the destruction of the planet Krypton.

The super-villain Brainiac as he appears in the pages of DC Comics is quite different from his interpretation on Smallville.

Arthur Curry/Aquaman : Alan Ritchson

1st Smallville appearance: Season 5 Episode 92 - Aqua

Arthur "AC" Curry is a mysterious metahuman swimmer that has a special connection with water and the life forms within it. He is a marine biology student at the University of Miami and a former member of Green Arrow's team of pro-active heroes under the codename:Aquaman.

In the comics, Aquaman is the King of the lost land of Atlantis. He is very protective of the sea, and in his recent incarnations has an almost inhospitable personality to "surface dwellers".

Andrea Rojas : Denise Quiñones

1st Smallville appearance: Season 5 Episode 101 - Vengeance

Andrea Rojas was a bumbling, mild-mannered intern who worked with Chloe Sullivan at the Daily Planet. She also happened to be a metahuman vigilante known as the Angel of Vengeance, a mysterious warrior woman who defends the citizens of Metropolis.

The version of Andrea in the comics is different from the one depicted on Smallville. In the comics, she is called Acrata and not the Angel of Vengeance. Acrata specializes in striking against authority.

Victor Stone/Cyborg : Lee Thompson Young

1st Smallville appearance: Season 5 Episode 103 - Cyborg

Victor Stone is a teenager with endoskeletal cybernetic enhancements. He is part of Green Arrow’s superhero team under the code name Cyborg.

On the show, Cyborg's implants are endoskeletal, while in the comics his implants have always been exoskeletal. This creates a distinctive and different look between Smallville and the comics.

Jimmy Olsen : Aaron Ashmore

1st Smallville appearance: Season 6 Episode 111 - Zod

Henry James "Jimmy" Olsen was a young photographer who lived in Metropolis and worked at the Daily Planet until shortly before his death.

In the comics Jimmy is usually portrayed as being five-to-ten years younger than both Lois and Clark, being in his mid twenties while they are in their thirties. However, when the Smallville Jimmy was killed by Doomsday, it was revealed at his funeral that his name was "Henry James Olsen" implying that he was not the same Jimmy as from the comics, but rather his younger brother would turn out to be the Jimmy of the mythology.

James Bartholomew Olsen : Ryan Harder

1st Smallville appearance: Season 8 Episode 174 – Doomsday

Bizarro : Tom Welling

1st Smallville appearance: Season 6 Episode 111 - Zod

Bizarro Clark, or simply Bizarro, was the last and possibly most dangerous Zoner. He was accidentally created in a laboratory on the planet Krypton, and was sent into the Phantom Zone by Jor-El and Martian Manhunter.

Bizarro, based on the different eras of the comics, has seen an abundance of different origin stories and histories.

Titan : Kane (Glenn Jacobs)

1st Smallville appearance: Season 6 Episode 111 - Zod

Titan was a powerful humanoid alien who was inadvertently freed from the Phantom Zone by Clark Kent. Unlike most other Zoners, he still possessed his body.

In the comic books, Titan was a giant green member of Darkseid's Elite from from the planet Apokolips,

Oliver Queen/ Green Arrow : Justin Hartley

1st Smallville appearance: Season 6 Episode 111 - Sneeze

Oliver Jonas Queen is the billionaire CEO of Queen Industries who sometimes masquerades as the emerald archer vigilante known as Green Arrow. As Green Arrow, Oliver dresses in green and black and commands a variety of arrows and gadgets for many forms of defense.

In current DC continuity, unlike his depiction in Smallville, Oliver had to be convinced to join the established Justice League of America. He originally felt that mass teams of heroes were "soulless" and that they "sacrificed the little guy." Unbeknownst to the team, however, Oliver bankrolled the newly established Justice League in the years preceding Batman's funding.

J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter : Phil Morris

1st Smallville appearance: Season 6 Episode 118 - Static

John Jones is a super-powered alien from the planet Mars, who works as a homicide detective for the Metropolis Police Department. Before that, he worked as an intergalactic bounty hunter known as Martian Manhunter. He was the last surviving member of an alien civilization that once existed on Mars; he once worked for Jor-El, trapping and imprisoning criminals from the 28 known galaxies.

So far on the show, the Martian Manhunter has shown capabilities similar to most of his comic powers. His origin, however, has yet to be explored in detail. In the comics, the Martian Manhunter is the last surviving citizen of the planet Mars (which creates a special kinship with Superman) due to a war that broke out between two Martian races that laid waste to most of his world, killing the entire civilization. He also shares the obsession for Oreo cookies.

Kara Kent/Supergirl : Laura Vandervoort

1st Smallville appearance: Season 7 Episode 133 - Bizarro

Kara Kent is Clark Kent's Kryptonian cousin, the daughter of Zor-El and a member of the House of El.

Smallville's interpretation of Kara features aspects of all the Supergirl incarnations, from yesteryear to present. Her origin in the series, however, is influenced by the most recent revision to it outlined above.

Lara-El : Helen Slater

1st Smallville appearance: Season 7 Episode 138 - Lara

Lara-El was the Kryptonian biological mother of Kal-El and the wife of Jor-El. She perished along with her husband when her home planet Krypton exploded due to the fanatical actions of her brother-in-law Zor-El who used Brainiac to ignite the planet's core.

In the comics, there has been many different version of Lara. The original version had her behave as a simple wife and mother, but in later stories it was implied that she was infact a highly trained pilot and a member of the Kryptonian space program.

Zor-El : Christopher Heyerdahl

1st Smallville appearance: Season 7 Episode 138 - Lara

Zor-El as a Kryptonian scientist who was directly responsible for the destruction of his own home planet Krypton. He was a member of the House of El: The father of Kara, the younger brother of Jor-El, and the uncle of Kal-El.

Zor-El has been shown in the current comic’s continuity as a member of the Artist Guild, whose wife, a scientist named Alura, designed the ship that carried Kara to Earth during Krypton's destruction. Kara was sent to protect Kal-El and to be the only person who remembered life on Krypton. In the comics, Zor-El is very different from his Smallville incarnation; he was even seen getting along well with Jor-El.

Dinah Lance/Black Canary : Alaina Huffman
