KILOWOG: Green Lantern Drill Sergeant [bio]

Comic Book History

Who is KILOWOG?
KILOWOG is the Green Lantern of Space Sector 674 and The Corps drill sergeant. Green Lantern KILOWOG was created by Steve Englehart and Joe Staton, and the character first appeared in Green Lantern Corps # 201 (June 1986).

First Appearance

KILOWOG was a geneticist and one of his planet's most brilliant minds. After the previous Lantern, Branwill, died, KILOWOG was chosen to be a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

KILOWOG is from the planet Bolovax Vik, like others of his race he is a towering alien with a brutish and porcine appearance. KILOWOG is renowned throughout the Green Lantern Corps as the primary trainer of the Corps' newest recruits.

KILOWOG started his Green Lantern career in the bottom of his rookie class. KILOWOG was trained by Green Lantern Ermey, who would often use the word "Poozer", which meant "useless rookies". After the death of his Teacher he worked hard to fill in the void of his mentor and became one of the renowned trainers of Rookie Lanterns.

During the "Crisis on Infinite Earths", Bolovax Vik, KILOWOG's homeplanet, was destroyed. This was a powerful blow to the giant Green Lantern, as his race lived a highly communal lifestyle, and to be alone was one of the worst things imaginable. However, KILOWOG was able to rescue the entire population of his homeworld by storing their collective life essences within his ring upon that world's annihilation.

At a time when the Guardian of the Universe left for a different dimension, the Green Lanterns were no longer bound to serve only on their own space sector. Green Lantern KILOWOG relocated to Earth with his former pupil Jordan. His appearance at first frightened most humans. KILOWOG was instrumental in the creation of the Soviet Union's first super-powered force, the Rocket Red Brigade.

During the "Emerald Twilight" arc, numerous Green Lanterns were sent to stop the supposedly insane Hal Jordan. The very last GL to oppose Jordan was KILOWOG himself, on Oa. He attempted to prevent his old pupil from entering and absorbing the power of the Great Battery itself, which destroyed the Corps. KILOWOG was disintegrated with a blast by Jordan's ring, leaving nothing but a seared skull and ashes.

The enigmatic being known as Dark Lantern seemed strangely familiar to those closely acquainted with the legacy of the Green Lantern Corps when he first made his presence known on Earth. He was created by some of the remaining Green Lanterns who had lost their rings when Hal Jordan went mad. They tapped into arcane forces and based on the unusual nature of the Bolovax Vik afterlife, they converted the soul of KILOWOG into the Dark Lantern in order to send him after Jordan.

KILOWOG along with many of the Green Lantern corps members who died were revived, they reformed with the Guardians leading them once again. KILOWOG returned to his role as Green Lantern drill sergeant, training new "poozers".

In “Flashpoint", KILOWOG perished trying to stop Nekron and his Black Lantern Corps from completely annihilating Sector 674.

Message to the CBM community:
To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not, please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. MABUHAY CBM and Godspeed!
