DR OCTOPUS: Master Planner

DR OCTOPUS: Master Planner
" The Sweet air of freedom is once again mine to breathe. It shall not be taken from me again!"
--DR OCTOPUS

Who is DR OCTOPUS?
DR OCTOPUS's real name is Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius, a Marvel Comics supervillain that first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #3 (1963). A highly intelligent mad scientist, Doctor Octopus is one of the archenemies of Spider-Man. He is typically portrayed as a stocky, myopic man who utilizes four powerful, mechanical appendages, and is obsessed with proving his own genius and destroying Spider-Man.

First Appearance

Otto Octavious was a well respected nuclear physicist, atomic research consultant, inventor, and lecturer. He designed a set of highly advanced mechanical arms controlled via a brain–computer interface to assist him with his research into atomic physics. The tentacle arms were resistant to radiation and were capable of great strength and highly precise movement, attached to a harness that fit around his body. it was also because of this invention that Otto was given the nickname DR OCTOPUS.

One night while working with chemicals, there was a leak that caused an explosion that engulfed and fused Otto's chest harness to his skin and damaged his brain.

From the depression and anger from the accident, Otto became dangerous and insane. More megalomaniacal and dangerous with full mental control of his mechanical arms. This started his many clashes with Spider-man/

DR OCTOPUS led a career in crime, revenge, and world domination. Clearly impulsive and insane, DR OCTOPUS was more of a dangerous man and a serious threat to Spider-Man and Manhattan city. After being defeated by Spider-Man a couple of times, DR OCTOPUS decided to form a group of supervillains dubbed the the SInister Six.

Following Spider-Man's defeat of the Sinister Six, Octopus assembled another group of costumed underlings and established an undersea base. Calling himself the Master Planner.

His plans foiled, Otto Octavious was placed in prison with his mechanical arms successfully removed and confiscated. But he realized that he could mentally control his mechanical arms remotely even at a great distance, Otto used them to free himself from prison.

Free again, Doc Ock seized upon the Kingpin's absence to gather his forces and launch an all-out gang war against Hammerhead's thugs. Both armies caused a huge and destructive gang war that caused the attention of Spider-Man who ended up defeating DR OCTOPUS again.

His crowning achievement of evil was the near-fatal beating of Spider-Man's then-partner, the Black Cat, which led to Spider-Man beating Doc Ock to within an inch of his life. The trauma of the beating he received from Spider-Man left Octavius afraid of Spider-Man and spiders in general for years, and he needed to be treated for his acute arachnophobia.

During the clone war storyline, DR OCTOPUS was murdered by an insane Peter Parker clone named Kaine.

But we know comicbook deaths are never permanent so, not long after DR OCTOPUS is resurrected by a secretive clan of ninjas, known as the Hand. Then some time later still, he is brainwashed to take down the Green Goblin, but as always Spider-man is there to mess with these villains.

After years of being beaten, Otto's body and brain never healed from the damage he received in the past. Being told that that he was going to die within months, Otto felt that he was cheated on making a name of himself as Doctor Octopus.

POWERS & ABILITIES
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Dr Octopus' superhuman abilities derive from the four mentally-controlled, electronically-powered, telescoping, prehensile titanium-steel tentacles attached to a stainless steel harness encircling his body from lower chest to waist. Each tentacle, approximately five inches in diameter, terminates in three single-jointed pincers. The pincers are able to rotate in relation to the arm for 360 degrees, in a screwdriver-like twisting motion. Each tentacle segment contains four high-efficiency electric motors equipped with a clutched, helical-gear train, independently mounted on frictionless gimbals and housed in four thin, overlapping layers of titanium-niobium steel. The titanium-steel alloy is light, has high-tensile strength, a high melting point, and high thin-wall rigidity. The motors get their power from a small nuclear-powered thermo-electric generator, which can provide several hundred watts per hour for up to five years before needing to replace its U-239 core. The tentacles have been modified since the time of the original accident to include high-efficiency battery packs and individual micro-circuit control modules. In the event that Octopus loses consciousness, the control module of each arm has enough pre-programmed conditional responses in its memory chip to enable it to perform a relatively complex sequence of actions, such as saving his life.

Telepathic Control over Tentacles: Octopus can control the actions of his artificial arms psionically, even when they have been severed from his body and are separated from him by vast distances.

Telescoping: Each tentacle is approximately six feet long at full contraction, but can extend to a maximum of 24 feet in length.

Superhuman Striking Force: Each tentacle is capable of moving at a speed of ninety feet per second and strike with the force of a jackhammer.

High-Wind Generation: The tentacles can generate 50 mile per hour winds if spun like a giant fan.

Wall-Climbing and Traveling: By combining the intrinsic strength of both his tentacles and the pincers, Doctor Octopus can scale stone, brick, or concrete walls by rending "handholds" in the surface of the wall. Octopus is able to use his tentacles for traversing horizontal distances as well. At full extension, he can travel high above the ground as if on stilts, either using two tentacles, or for maximum speed (approximately 50 miles per hour), four tentacles.

Sensation Feeling: Although there are no nerve endings throughout the length of his artificial arms, Octopus can "feel" basic sensations with them. As a result of the mutagenic changes from exposure to radiation during the accident, electrical connections have been made from his chest harness to his spine. Thus, Doctor Octopus can mentally perceive "tactile" sensations by feeling the amount of electrical resistance that the pincer's electric motors feel when the pincers grasp an object.

Superhuman Concentration: Doctor Octopus possesses extraordinary mental abilities and concentration, and through years of practice is able to perform two complex and two simple independent actions, simultaneously, one with each arm.

AbilitiesRadiation SpecialistDoctor Octopus is one of the world's leading authorities on nuclear radiation and its effect on animal physiology.

EngineeringDoctor Octopus is a brilliant engineer and inventor.

LeadershipDoctor Octopus is a superb strategist and a charismatic leader.

CBM FIGHT CLUB CHALLENGE

Message to the CBM community:To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. MABUHAY CBM and Godspeed!
