Who is LOKI?
LOKI is the Asgardian God of Mischief. Son of the frost giant king, Laufey, but as a child he was adopted by the All-Father Odin. His cosmic meddling led to the formation of the Avengers.
LOKI is a Marvel Comics supervillain. He is the adoptive brother and archenemy of the superhero Thor. He is based on the being of the same name from Norse mythology. The character first appeared in precursor of Marvel Comics, Timely Comics' Venus #6 (August 1949) and was created by writer Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller Jack Kirby. His first official Marvel appearance was in Journey into Mystery #85 (October 1962).
CHANGING APPEARANCES
Golden Age Appearance
LOKI's first appearance in Venus #6 (1949) was significantly different from the version we are now familiar with. During this time LOKI was inaccurately featured as a member of the Olympian gods exiled to the Underworld.
Life Long Feud with Thor
LOKI was resentful of the differences in which he and Thor were treated by the citizens of Asgard. The Asgardians valued great strength, tenacity, and bravery in battle above all things and LOKI was clearly inferior to his foster brother Thor in these areas. LOKI's gifts lay in other areas, most notably sorcery. His natural talent for causing mischief would make itself manifest and earned him a nickname as the god of Lies and Mischief. He grew steadily more malicious in his deeds, and his lust for both power and revenge was apparent to all those around him. Several times he tried to use tricks to get rid of Thor. In time, his nickname grew from being a playful and mischievous trickster god to the "God of Evil".
Formation of the Avenger
LOKI's schemes eventually came to include Earth itself and these schemes often drew some of Earth's superhuman heroes to defend Earth. He manipulated the Hulk into wreaking havoc using an illusion of dynamite on train tracks, while in astral form in an attempt to lure Thor to Asgard, which inadvertently led to the formation of the Avengers as several other heroes came to meet the Hulk. He would have several more tussle with the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
LOKI took command of Asgard
LOKI orchestrated a battle between Thor and the Destroyer. LOKI then took command of Asgard during the Odinsleep, and fled when Asgard was invaded by Mangog.
Acts of Vengeance
In disguise, LOKI manipulated a group of villains into engineering his "Acts of Vengeance". These are his plots against the Avengers and other heroes. He battled the combined forces of the Avengers. When his identity was ultimately revealed, he was defeated would actually die at the hands of Thor.
Ragnarok
LOKI has been prophesied to bring on the Ragnarök, "The Twilight of the Gods". LOKI fulfilled the prophecy by leading the enemies of Asgard against the Asgardians. The battle consumed all who participated in it. All Asgardians perished in this Ragnarok except for Thor, who would disappear into a deep sleep. With Thor's return, it was revealed that the Asgardians now exist on Earth in mortal guises
Female Form
After the Ragnarok, LOKI returned in a new female form. After LOKI's resurrection, she claimed to make a new vow: to never lie again. It was revealed that LOKI retained his male form after Ragnarok but hid himself inside a female body (which originally belonged to Thor's reborn lover Sif) in order to sell to Thor the idea that he wished to change.
Back to his Old Self
LOKI later appears to Thor to tell them that she will be returning to her male form shortly and that he has come to the realization that his body was meant for Sif.
Siege
LOKI was one of the orchestrator of the Siege of Asgard by some of Earth's superpowered individual. When the tides of battle turned we see LOKI attacked the mad Sentry/Void above the remains of the city of Asgard. This action could be a way to fake his own death.
Reincarnated Once Again
Thor, misses his brother, resurrects him to life in the form of a young boy. Thor restores part of his identity and memoryto him, with the exception of a guilty conscience for things he cannot remember.
LIVE APPEARANCE
Tom Hiddleston portrays LOKI in the live-action Marvel Studios film Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh.
POWERS & ABILITIES
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.
Despite being a member of the Frost Giants, LOKI possesses similar attributes to those possessed by the Asgardians.
Superhuman Strength: LOKI possesses superhuman strength that is substantially superior to that of an average Asgardian female or male.
Superhuman Stamina: LOKI's Frost Giant metabolism grants him superhuman levels of physical stamina in practically all activities. He can exert himself at peak capacity for about 24 hours before fatigue begins to impair him. However, much like his physical strength and durability, LOKI can temporarily augment his stamina through magical means.
Superhumanly Dense Tissue: Like all Asgardians, LOKI's bodily tissues have roughly 3 times the density of the same tissues in a human being. While he has the looks and physical proportions of a much smaller person, the increased density of his body actually makes him several hundred pounds heavier than he appears. This increased density also contributes to his superhuman strength to a limited degree.
Superhuman Durability: The tissues of LOKI's body are superhumanly durable and are roughly equal to those possessed by the average Asgardian male. However, at times, LOKI had imbued himself with magical abilities that enable him to withstand injuries that would prove fatal to another Asgardian. He is able to withstand high caliber bullets, falls from great heights, powerful impact forces, exposure to temperature extremes and powerful energy blasts without being injured.
Superhuman Longevity: Like all Asgardians, LOKI ages at a far slower rate than humans.
Sorcery: LOKI has the ability to generate and control a great quantity of mystical abilities for a variety of purposes. His known abilities include the ability to fire powerful beams of concussive force, generate highly durable force fields, bestow superhuman attributes to living beings or inanimate objects, teleport across dimensions and augment his physical attributes temporarily. He can also bring inanimate objects to life, or mystically imbue objects or beings with specific but temporary powers.
Regenerative Healing Factor: Like all Asgardians, LOKI is still capable of being injured though, also like all Asgardians, his metabolism enables him to rapidly regenerate damaged tissue much faster and more extensively than a human being. However, through the use of his sorcery, LOKI's ability to heal himself is far above that of other Asgardians.
Psionics: LOKI has demonstrated powerful psionic capabilities, the full limits of which aren't known. He has demonstrated the ability to project his thoughts telepathically across great distances as well as potent hypnotic capabilities.
Shape-shifting: LOKI possesses highly developed shape-shifting capabilities. He is able to adopt almost any form imaginable whether it be animals, other humanoid beings, or even inanimate objects.
AbilitiesLOKI has a genius level intellect and possesses a great deal of knowledge of the mystic arts, gifted with mastery superior to that of a Sorcerer Supreme's. He is also extremely cunning and an expert battle strategist. He is also a formidable combatant in his own right, particularly as a swordsman or in the use of his arious energy manipulative powers in combat situations.
