ABOMINATION: Ravager of Worlds

"You are beneath me, She-Hulk! You are ALL beneath me! For as long as your cousin is away... the ABOMINATION is the strongest one there is!"
--ABOMINATION

Who is ABOMINATION?
The ABOMINATION is Emil Blonsky a supervillain that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appears in Tales to Astonish #90 (April 1967), and was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Gil Kane.

The comics where ABOMINATION first appeared, and his first appearance

Emil Blonsky started as a communist spy at Gamma Base in New Mexico, Blonsky activated Dr. Bruce Banner's gamma ray machine and bombarded himself with a greater dosage of gamma rays than that which mutated Banner into the Hulk. Since specific gamma ray mutation is determined by variations of genetic material, Blonsky's transformation resulted in a less human-looking form than Hulk's.

In his first appearance, ABOMINATION was a large scaly humanoid with twice the strength of a non-enraged Hulk. ABOMINATION defeated the Hulk in their first battle but after that first encounter both of them met again several times with HULK winning most of these fights.

The ABOMINATION, unlike the Hulk, retains his full human intelligence. However, ABOMINATION could not transform back into a normal human form.

After his first appearance he was taken by the Cosmic Entity known as the Stranger to his base on another planet, intending to use him as an agent in future endeavors.

The ABOMINATION next appeared as a result of a spell cast by a coven of witches. The witches sought to prove their power by killing the alien Silver Surfer and hoped to summon a "tool" capable of doing so. Blonsky refused to obey the coven's commands, however, and left with plans to subjugate and rule the world. The Silver Surfer similarly escaped the coven and battled Blonsky. Eventually defeated, Blonsky was returned to the witches and returned to the Stranger's planet.

Eventually ABOMINATION made his way back to Earth, in the service of AIM leader MODOK. ABOMINATION, having been defeated by the HULK several times, developed a pathological fear of facing the Hulk. MODOK subjected the ABOMINATION to painful psychological conditioning to make him more afraid of Modok than of the Hulk, and sent him against the Hulk. The ABOMINATION failed to defeat the Hulk, however, and so Modok used his mental power to disintegrate the ABOMINATION.

Despite his seeming destruction, the ethereal being known as Tyrannus reconstructed the ABOMINATION, who had continued to exist as a cloud of free atoms. Tyrannus, who was in a similar state, decided to merge his atoms with those of the ABOMINATION. He transferred Blonsky's consciousness into a human body. The former spy finally found himself able to lead a normal life, albeit briefly. Trapped in the ABOMINATION's form, Tyrannus attempted to switch bodies with Blonsky. The process failed and the ABOMINATION became a mindless, rampaging beast who tussled with many heroes.

Later Emil Blonsky will find himself merged again with ABOMINATION. When the ABOMINATION was hired to attack a science facility, he saw Bruce Banner working there as a janitor. He recognizes Banner and forces him into becoming the Hulk but he is shocked to see that the Hulk is now gray and not nearly as powerful. Their battle destroys much of the base and ends when the ABOMINATION has a toxic waste container dumped on him which starts to melt his entire body. He falls to the ground and is immediately taken into custody by the government. His healing factor keeps him alive and eventually heals his entire body, but his face remains scarred for years.

Apparently driven mad by loneliness, his toxic waste scars healed, a ranting ABOMINATION rampaged through the town of Constellation. Irritated and jealous of Bruce Banner's happiness after his marriage to Betty Ross, daughter of General Thunderbolt Ross, he tried to frame Bruce for murder by using his own gamma-irradiated blood to poison her.

Learning about ABOMINATION's part on his wife's poisoning, the Hulk was furious, he fought and defeated Blonsky. The ABOMINATION was brought to justice and imprisoned in a military installation

Later the ABOMINATION was pardoned and "employed" by the U.S government as a hitman against hostile foreign powers.

The ABOMINATION reappears after the events of World War Hulk, encountering a new foe called the Red Hulk. This new opponent savagely beats, shoots, and kills the ABOMINATION.

The ABOMINATION has recently returned in Chaos War. Seemingly more powerful than ever he is strong enough to engage most of the Hulk family in close quarters combat. He has also shown to be strong enough to rip the blue hide off of A-Bomb. Doctor Strange stated that he was the strongest prisoner in the underworld.

LIVE MEDIA APPEARANCE
Emil Blonsky and the ABOMINATION appeared in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk as the main antagonist. Tim Roth plays Blonksy and supplies motion capture and voice effects for the ABOMINATION, which is digitally enhanced. In the film, Blonsky is a Russian-born captain in the British Royal Marines on loan to the US Armed Forces in its efforts to recapture Bruce Banner. A super-soldier serum transforms Blonksy into a superior soldier, but in an attempt to match the Hulk, he secretly receives an infusion of Banner's blood, which creates a mutation exacerbated by the serum to be more extreme than the Hulk.

POWERS & ABILITIES
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Superhuman Strength: The ABOMINATION possesses vast superhuman strength, enabling him to lift somewhere in excess of 100 tons.

Superhuman Stamina: The ABOMINATION's highly advanced musculature produces vastly less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human. He is capable of physically exerting himself at peak capacity for several days before the build up of fatigue toxins in his blood begins to impair him.

Superhuman Durability: In addition to great strength, the ABOMINATION's bodily tissues are substantially harder and more resistant to injury than the tissues of an ordinary human. The ABOMINATION's skin is capable of withstanding great heat without blistering, up to 3,500 Fahrenheit, great cold without freezing, down to -175 Fahrenheit, and great impacts without injury. His body is also capable of withstanding tremendous impact forces, such as artillery shells and powerful energy blasts, without sustaining injury.

Regenerative Healing Factor: Despite his great physical resilience, it is possible to injure him. However, he possesses an accelerated healing factor. As a result, he is capable of regenerating great amounts of damaged or destroyed tissue with much greater speed and efficiency than an ordinary human. The ABOMINATION is also immune to all known Earthly diseases and infections.

Underwater Breathing: The ABOMINATION's lung capacity allows him to breathe underwater for longer periods of time.

Suspended Animation: Extreme pain, cold, or extended lack of oxygen can cause the ABOMINATION to enter a coma-like state of suspended animation, in which he can survive, perhaps indefinitely.

AbilitiesEmil Blonsky was a skilled spy prior to his transformation into the ABOMINATION. He is also a formidable hand to hand combatant, preferring to use street fighting techniques that enable him to make full use of his great strength.

This is the 68th article in my Know Your CBM Character series. Any requests and suggestions for an article for this series write it down in the comment section BELOW.

Build up your GEEKCREDS by answering this:

Message to the CBM community:To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. MABUHAY CBM and Godspeed!

  1. When will the Abomination go from being the enemy of the Hulk unto Peter Parker/Spider-Man since he's more of a threat to him than the Hulk?
