ZOD : The General We Need To Kneel Before

"Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter."--Winston Churchill
With the announcement of Michael Shannon as ZOD in the new Superman movie. Let us learn more about the history of the character he is playing.

Who is General ZOD?
In the DC Universe there are several characters who bears this name. This feature will talk about two (2) of these characters that is most significant and is part of the mainstream continuity,

1. Silver Age (Earth 1)
General ZOD, Full name is Dru-ZOD, is a megalomaniacal Kryptonian, in charge of the military forces on Krypton. He met a young Jor-El, Superman's Kryptonian father, while he was an only an aspiring scientist. With power lust he attempted to take over Krypton with an army of robotic duplicates of himself. He was captured and sentenced to exile in the Phantom Zone for his crimes.

General ZOD first appeared in Adventure Comics #283 (April, 1961) and was created by Robert Bernstein and George Papp.

What are his powers and abilities?
Kryptonian Physiology: If ZOD is functioning within a yellow sun star system, he will develop superhuman powers similar to those of Superman.

Abilities
Leadership: ZOD has demonstrated his ability to lead others in the capacity of a military commander. Even after being sent into exile, ZOD commanded the obedience and respect of his fellow Phantom Zone criminals.

Strength Level
Average: By Kryptonian standards, ZOD possessed the strength level of a man his age, size and weight who engaged in moderate regular exercise. If exposed to yellow sun radiation, ZOD's strength capacity would increase to superhuman levels.

Appearance:
This General ZOD wears a traditional looking military outfit.

Let us now move on the next character bearing the name of General ZOD. But before we do that I think this is a good time for our new geeks to learn something new about the DC Universe. If you have read my previous article about Marvel's Nick Fury about him being both white and black, you already know a little about multiverses. DC also have their own multiverses, actually there was a time that they possibly had infinite number of multiverses. For now let us concentrate on Earth 1 where the above general came from. Earth 1 started during the DC's silver age of comics which is around 1960s, the golden age is around 1940s (their numerical designation is Earth 2). So, like I said before, there where other earths, infinite number of them. Which enters the story Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985), which combined all of these realities into one cohesive universe.

What happened after the event, well, some of the characters adjusted fine into this one new universe. Others had their history became so twisted and convulated (read my article on Hawkman, you will see how messed up he became). And then there are some like our good general who got his story and his history deleted as though he did not exist before.

One thing about that event is, it became a timeline marker for DC continuity (much like how we use B.C. and A.D.). So, we say pre-crisis and post-crisis. The General ZOD we stated above is from a pre-crisis DC and it will be years after that event that we'll meet another General ZOD.

2. New Earth
I hope you did not get a headache on my explanation above. We are now on the present timeline, very further along on post crisis (should I say post-crises because after the Crisis on Infinite Earths DC had undergone to several more crises - but that is a story for another time). The new status quo is after the merging of the universes, DC is back to several multiverses but a finite number, the exact number is 52. Their main continuity right now is no longer Earth 1 but New Earth. This is where we will meet the current General ZOD.

This General ZOD whose real name is also Dru-ZOD, suffered the same fate as his post-crisis counterpart. He was a Kryptonian, that came from a long line of distinguished Military Guild members, who was later exiled to the Phantom Zone for acts of sedition by Superman's biological father, Jor-El.

This version of the character was created by Geoff Johns, Richard Donner and Adam Kubert. He first appeared in Action Comics #845 (January, 2007).

What are his powers and abilities?
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Kryptonian Physiology: ZOD's cellular structure is more dense, resilient and biologically more effective than human tissue. Strangely enough, he does not seem to possess superhuman strength levels despite his enhanced cellular ability without constant exposure to yellow solar energy. Without such charging, his strength seems on par for a human of his height and weight who engages in regular physical activity.

Solar Energy Absorption: ZOD, like all Kryptonians, obtains his superhuman powers and abilities by absorbing the radiation emitted from Earth's yellow sun, and then converts its energy to his abilities, as his body acts a solar battery for such energy.

Superhuman Strength: he can bend and break through reinforced steel, crush wood panels, and can lift extremely heavy objects and uproot and even decimate full-sized buildings and other structures with his might.

Invulnerability: ZOD is resistant to all forms of physical and mental types of harm, and as such, humans can't hurt him, bullets bounce off him, rockets, bombs and lasers can't even leave a mark on him, high-voltage energy emissions (beams) can't penetrate through him, and is immune to all earthly diseases and viruses, and he can only be harmed by other high-tier cosmic beings.

Superhuman Stamina: ZOD can maintain continuous movement and can exercise for unlimited periods of time without ever getting weary or tired in the process.

Flight: ZOD possesses the ability to defy the forces of gravity and fly at speeds in excess to the speed of sound. The mechanism by which he flies is unknown, but some suggestions include the use of a field of energy which allows unconscious manipulation of gravity or diffraction/reflection of gravity due to unidentified Kryptonian organs affected by a yellow sun. Alternately, this power could be explained as a psionic manipulation of a personal anti-gravitational aura, which is also caused by his Kryptonian cells and exposure to a yellow sun.

Superhuman Speed: ZOD can exercise and or move at incredible speeds that greatly exceeds the sound barrier, and has the potential to move at speeds greater than the speed of light.

Enhanced Senses: The acuity of ZOD's five senses are many times greater than that of the standard Earth human.

Telescopic Vision: ZOD can, using the muscles in his eyes, see objects and people from vast distances away, more specifically, from at least 20 yards away, without damaging or straining his eyes.

X-Ray Vision: ZOD can mentally break down the polymers in objects and even organisms, allowing him to see right through the object or person, and as such, he can see through anything besides lead.

Microscopic Vision: ZOD can, by using the the tight, firm muscles composed in his eyes, see residues, small marks, bacterias and structures of viruses, and even cells that are inside interior complexion bodies, without causing any damage to his eyes.

Electro-magnetic Spectrum Vision: ZOD can perceive various patterns within the electromagnetic spectrum. He can see and identify radio/television waves as well as any and all broadcast/transmitted frequencies, allowing him to avoid detection through radar or satellite monitoring methods.

Infrared Vision: In combination with his other extraordinary vision-based powers, ZOD can also see into the infrared spectrum.

Heat Vision: Through a conscious act of will, ZOD has the ability to fire beams of intense thermal energy at a target simply by looking at it. Visually, the power is typically depicted as two beams of red light firing from his eyes.

Superhuman Hearing: ZOD possesses the ability to hear any sound at any volume or pitch. He has enough control to block out ambient sounds in order to focus on a specific source/frequency. He can identify a person by their heartbeat, or pick out a single voice in an entire city.

Super-Breath: ZOD possesses the ability to create hurricane force winds by blowing, and to chill his breath in order to freeze a target. ZOD can also inhale large volumes of air, an ability used when dealing with and disposing things like clouds of poison gas.

AbilitiesLeadership: General ZOD is an expert in military tactics and strategic planning.

Appearances:
Here are the few costumes the General has worn during his appearances in Action Comics

Gray suit with long coat and goggles

Trading the goggles for a beret

The general as he appears in the retelling of his origins

In New Krypton (a whole planet grown in the opposite orbit of Earth - you know you love comics because of statements like that), populated by Kryptonians who were previously trapped in the bottle city of Kandor, ZOD was named leader of the military guild.

ZOD in live media
1. Terence Stamp
General ZOD appears in Superman: The Movie and Superman II, portrayed by actor Terence Stamp as a pathologically arrogant and pompous aristocrat, almost bored with his incredible powers and disappointed with the ease of overtaking Earth. Terence Stamp's portrayal has led to ZOD becoming one of Superman's best-known villains, and fans have come to view his portrayal as the definitive version of the character.

2. Michael Rosenbaum
General ZOD appeared In season 5 of Smallville. First as computer generated phantom who looks like a young terence stamp, then later on possessed the body of Lex Luthor.

3. Callum Blue
Still on Smallville we meet a younger ZOD, only having the rank major. Later on we discover that this is only a clone recalling his original self's memories believing they were his own.

Message to the CBM community:To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). SILVER SURFER : The Sentinel of the Spaceways

"Through space the universe encompasses and swallows me up like an atom; through thought I comprehend the world."--Blaise Pascal
Last seen SILVER SURFER defeating that horrible Galactus Cloud, let us get some breather and learn more about this former herald. Who he is and what are his powers?

Who is SILVER SURFER?
SILVER SURFER is Norrin Radd from the planet Zenn-La. He offered his services to Galactus, the devourer of worlds, in return for his home be spared. Galactus gifted him with a portion of his "Power Cosmic" and a surfboard like transportation that allows him to travel the universe to look for worlds that his master can devour. But his inherent nobility will make him rebel against Galactus, to become his own person again and become the Sentinel of the Spaceways.

The SILVER SURFER is created by Jack Kirby. The character first appeared in Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966).

What are his powers and abilities?
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

The Power Cosmic: The SILVER SURFER possesses the Power Cosmic which was granted to him by Galactus, making Norrin one of the most powerful beings in the Universe.

Matter Manipulation and Reconfiguration / Energy Emission and Absorption: The Surfer has complete control of the four fundamental forces of the universe, reaching nearly any effect he desires. As a result, the Surfer can rearrange matter to create other configurations and can even transmute elements. The Surfer can channel beams of energy through his hands with sufficient destructive force to destroy planet. Others abilities include to phase through object, to accelerate the evolution of lifeforms on a planet wide scale, to see the past by peeling back the layers of time, time travel, trans dimensional travel, the manipulation and discharge of any form of energy or radiation, the bestowal of limited cosmic powers to others, read minds and to influence human emotion and sensation. The Surfer also possesses the ability to suppress the powers of other mutants/beings making them temporarily or permanently out of use to them. He can heal living beings even if they are near-death.

Godlike Strength: The Surfer possesses great physical strength. He can lift (press) far in excess of 100 tons effortlessly and also can increase his strength to incalculable levels.

Invulnerability: The SILVER SURFER's silvery "skin" was designed to easily withstand the rigors of deep-space travel, and thus far, it has proven to be virtually indestructible. In fact, his entire body was made highly resistant to injury and he is thus invulnerable to almost all types of physical harm. The SILVER SURFER can easily withstand the crushing pressures of a black hole. He is not bothered by the friction associated with atmospheric re-entry, and has withstood plunges into stars and even supernovas unharmed . He also routinely weathers the stresses associated with high-speed travel through space and hyperspace.

Godlike Stamina: The Surfer's highly enhanced musculature generates no fatigue toxins, granting him inexhaustible physical stamina.

Hyperspace Travel: By exceeding 99% of the speed of light (186,000 miles per second), the SILVER SURFER can shift himself into hyperspace, a dimension in which velocity is not limited by the speed of light.

Cosmic Senses: The SILVER SURFER has certain cosmic-energy enhanced perceptions which enable him through concentration to become aware of the patterns of energy anywhere in the world. These abilities allow him far-ranging vision (in space he can see people clearly over a light year away), the ability to see sub-atomic particles, superhuman hearing, the ability to detect fields, traces, and concentrations of energy and discern their natures.

Cosmic Self-Sustenance: The SILVER SURFER does not need to eat or breathe since he absorbs life-maintaining cosmic energy directly through his skin.

AbilitiesAs Norrin Radd, the Surfer was a scientist, a dreamer, and something of a philosopher, skills which he sometimes finds quite useful. The Surfer, however, is only an average hand-to-hand combatant, depending almost entirely upon his cosmic powers in battle.

What are the changes he underwent?
The character's look is locked since day one. How do you improve the look of a silver guy in a silver surfboard? The answer, you can't which says a lot about the strength of the character design of Jack Kirby. Therefore, in this portion will just take a look on the artists interpretation of SILVER SURFER throughout the years.

1. Fantastic

Katar Hol : The Winged Warrior HAWKMAN

“The bird hunting a locust is unaware of the hawk hunting him”--a Proverb
Lately he's been spotted flying around in Smallville its high time we learn more about this CBM Character - HAWKMAN. This feature answers the questions - Who he is? What are his abilities? What are the changes he underwent? Who has portrayed him in Comic Book Movies?

Who is HAWKMAN?
He is Carter Hall an archaeologist and museum curator. He is Prince Khufu who lived during the reign of Ramesses II in the 19th dynasty of ancient Egypt. He is Katar Hol an alien policeman from the planet Thanagar with access to advanced technology. He is many more. He is all of these because of a curse that reincarnates him throughout the ages. In all these lives he is a hero.

HAWKMAN is created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Dennis Neville, and first appeared in Flash Comics #1. He carries archaic weaponries especially the mace and has a set of large artificial wings, attached to a harness made from the special Nth metal that allows flight. Most incarnations of HAWKMAN work closely with a partner/romantic interest named Hawkgirl or Hawkwoman.

What are his powers and abilities?
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Artificial Feathered Wings: His wings, which are laced with Nth metal, allow him to control navigation and guidance during flight.

Nth Metal Belt & Boots: HAWKMAN flies by way of an anti-gravity Belt & boots constructed from Thanagarian Nth Metal its abilities are controlled mentally.

Nth Metal Enhancement: The metal is psycho-reactive, responding to its bearer's thoughts and in its base form has a number of electromagnetic/gravitational properties.

Enhanced Strength: Carters strength level is increased by the Nth metal.

Enhanced Durability: HAWKMAN is able to withstand blows from superhuman opponents.

Enhanced Vision: observing objects at great distances or at speeds faster than can be perceived by the normal eye.

Enhanced Minor Healing Factor: capable of mending all but the most serious of wounds.

Temperature Regulation: exposure to the Nth Metal allows him to regulate his temperature to withstand extremely cold temperatures.

Flight: ability to fly at speeds up to at least 200 MPH.

Energy Disruption: It has been revealed that Nth Metal can disrupt the very force drawn from the fabric of space/time.

What are the changes in look he underwent?

1. Early Appearances
Flash Comics Vol 1 #1 (January, 1940)
HAWKMAN appeared in Flash Comics #1-104. This HAWKMAN was Carter Hall, a reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian prince, Khufu, who discovered that the mysterious "ninth metal" could negate the effects of gravity and allow him to fly. He donned a costume with large wings to allow him to control his flight and became the crimefighter, HAWKMAN. In his first appearance, he wore a mask very different from what we are familiar with, he has the wing harness strapped around his chest but no hawk logo yet. Like many of the superheroes then he had his boxers outside his trousers (thank you Superman... you truly are a trailblazer). The color motiff he had; yellow, green and orange sticks until this day.

On the next issue he changes the design of his mask. And change the color of the circular portion of his harness on his chest from yellow to red.

Further issues still we see HAWKMAN making more changes on his mask now looking more like a viking full helmet.

He later will trade in the hawk helmet with a ski mask and hawk logo displayed on the forehead. This gave him a more traditional looking superhero face.

2. All Star
HAWKMAN will also has adventures in All Star Comics from 1940 -1978. His costume resembles whatever he was wearing in Flash Comics during those times, as both these titles published concurrently.

3. Justice League
HAWKMAN also had some adventures with the Justice League of America of Earth 1 from 1963-1985. His costume still changes throughout the series. One of the notieceable change is the logo on his chest.

4. Own Series
In May 1964 HAWKMAN got his own series, it is in this series that he got the logo for his chest. This version of HAWKMAN is a policeman from Thanagar. The first volume of HAWKMAN's series lasted until until September of 1968.

5. All Star Squadron
By 1981 HAWKMAN is a part of the All Star Squadron he is in 63 issues which lasted until 1987. The design of his costume, and his look during this time has already been standardized, though he seems to be missing the hawk-head logo on his chest that he was wearing on his own series.

6. Volume 2
1986-1987 HAWKMAN got another shot on a solo series.

7. Justice Society of America
In the 9-Issue run of the first volume of Justice Society of America (1991). HAWKMAN was present on the last 5 issues. His back again in wearing the mask with the spreaded wing hawk on his forehead.

8. Zero Hour
The Zero Hour event happened in Vol. 3 of the HAWKMAN series, here we have a HAWKMAN who is a host for a mysterious "hawkgod", that merged the Carter Hall museum curator and reincarnation of Khufu, with Katar Hol the Thanagarian police.

The first HAWKMAN we see in this series is Katar Hol the Thanagarian police, this series started in '93, by now you should know that the 90s gave us the coolest character designs. So when we Katar he is sporting a Thanagarian Metal wing, a kickass red hawkhead logo on his chest, wearing a black suit all over (no showing of unnecessary skin) and of course sports a long black hair.

Katar Hol and the fashion in Hawkworld(these are costumes he wore while a policeman in Thanagar):

Below we see Carter Hall before he has merges with Katar Hol, notice that his costume is a yellow sleeveless shirt instead of the yellow bands crossing on his chest.

After the merger, we have the new Katar Hol with the fashion sensibility of the old Carter Hall who just likes to show some skin. Though the color choice is the muted black of the Thanagarian Hol.

9. JSA
Currently HAWKMAN is a member of the JSA, Justice Society of America. Where he returned wearing his old costume and its color scheme. I need to mention that he is no longer wearing the red trunks outside his trouser (if only he could tell Superman to wear his trunks properly as well).

10. Black Lantern
HAWKMAN, because of his history with death, was one of those heroes who was transformed into a Black Lantern during the Blackest Night event.

11. White Lantern
During the Brightest Day event, HAWKMAN was given a task that if he could fulfill it, returns him back to the state of living. We see him briefly donning the White Lantern outfit.

Who has played HAWKMAN in live media?
1. Bill Nuckols
HAWKMAN was featured in the Legends of the Superheroes TV Specials in 1979, portrayed by Bill Nuckols.

2. Actor in a Baby Ruth Commercial
A 1997 commercial (I don't know who the actor is, but I didn't really tried searching for him.)

3. Michael Shanks
HAWKMAN was in the TV series Smallville, in the two-parter episode "Absolute Justice" where he is joined with other members of the Justice Society. He died in the show battling a supervillain and was buried in Egypt.
