Blade : The Daywalker Featurette

"It will have blood, they say; blood will have blood." --William Shakespeare
Its been years since we have Blade on the big screen, its time to spark interest again on the character. But first let us refresh our memories on who Blade is.

Who is Blade?
Blade is Eric Brooks, his mother was bitten by a vampire while she was in labor with him. Gifted or cursed with special abilities, he used this abilities to become a Vampire Hunter. Later he became a Daywalker, a creature with all of the vampire's strengths but none of their weaknesses.

Blade (Eric Brooks) is a superhero vampire hunter created by writer Marv Wolfman and penciller Gene Colan, his first appearance was in the comic book The Tomb of Dracula #10 (July 1973).

What are his powers and abilities?
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Blade was born with an immunity to the effects of vampire bites.

Has the ability to "smell" supernatural creatures.

A greatly prolonged lifespan.

After being bitten by Michael Morbius, The Living Vampire, Blade gained various superhuman physical capabilities similar to those of vampires.

Superhumanly Acute Senses: Blade's sense of sight and hearing are heightend to levels comparable to those possessed by true vampires. He is capable of seeing objects with perfect clarity at much greater distances than an ordinary human. He retains this same level of clarity even in near-total darkness. Blade's hearing is similarly enhanced, allowing him to detect sounds that an ordinary human can't and to be able to hear sounds an ordinary human can, but at greater distances.

Superhuman Strength: Blade is supernaturally strong and is capable of lifting about 1 ton.

Superhuman Speed: Blade is capable of running and moving at speeds greater than even the finest human athlete.

Superhuman Agility: Blade's agility, balance and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete.

Superhuman Stamina: Blade's musculature generates less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human. He can exert himself at peak capacity for several hours before fatigue begins to impair him.

Regenerative Healing Factor: Blade possesses an accelerated healing ability that allows him to heal mild to moderate injuries with much greater speed and efficiency than an ordinary human. Blade is capable of healing from severe slashes and puncture wounds within a matter of hours.

Immunity To Vampire Vulnerabilities

Abilities
Blade is a master martial artist proficient in practically every form of weaponry known to man. His particular specialty is the use of edged weapons, be they teakwood daggers or swords. Blade is a master in the use of small bladed weapons and can hurl knives with great accuracy. Blade also shows great skill with firearms, including both automatic and semi-automatic, which he often modifies to fire hollow-point, garlic-filled silver bullets. He is also a skilled jazz trumpeter.

What are the changes he underwent?

1. First Appearance
Blade was introduced in Marvel Comics' The Tomb of Dracula #10 (July 1973). He was designed to be very heroic looking. with bandoleer of blades, leather jacket and so on". His features were based on "a composite of black actors" including NFL football star-turned-actor Jim Brown.

2. Midnight Son
Blade is unrelentless in hunting Vampires until the 90s, until he banded with like minded inviduals who are dedicated in preserving the boundaries between our world and the dark realms, The Midnight Sons.

3. Nightstalker
Blade and few other "special" individuals formed Borderline Investigations Inc. an investigative agency that battle supernatural beings, But they briefly disbanded. When they reassembled again they rename their group, Nightstalkers. Nightstalkers started operating November of 1992.

4. Switchblade
It is in the 10th issue of Nightstalker that we Blade transformed into Switchblade. It started with Blade's strong hate for the occult. He would find a page in the dreaded Darkhold that will eliminate all things occult. As soon as Blade got the page, he turned into Switchblade. He began killing off indescriminately, including his teammates. Later on another page on the Darkhold undone the changes in Blade as well as the things he has done.

5. Daywalker
With the popularity of the Snipes's Blade Movie. They need to change the comic book character to resemble the powers he had on the movie. Enter Morbius, the Living Vampire, He bit Blade and transformed him to what he is in the movie a "Daywalker" -all the Vampire strengths and none of their weaknesses. Though Blade would deny that the changes in him came from that bite. This event happened in the pages of Peter Parker: Spiderman #8 (August 1999).

6. Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Blade also had a run-in with SHIELD's covert branch called Silvereye, who were retrieving his blood to create vampire operative. With the help of other vampire hunters, they were able to stop them.

7. Modern
Blade is now running all over Marvel Universe Officially joins S.H.I.E.L.D., became a member of Captain Britain's MI:13 and has been helping out the X-Men when they had some vampire infestation among their ranks. Blade now pretty much looks like his character in the movie.

Blade in Live Media
1. Wesley Snipes
In 1998, the New Line Cinema film Blade starred Wesley Snipes in the title role. The film diverges almost entirely from prior comic representations of Blade, completely revamping the character's demeanor, powers and weaknesses. Traditionally, Blade was often presented as loquacious and boastful, yet in the film he is stoic and nearly silent. Rather than a normal human with immunity to vampirism and vampire hypnosis solely reliant on skill and ruthlessness, he is a superhuman with vampiric powers but none of the inherent weaknesses, with the exception of their thirst. The movie Blade is portrayed as an African American born in Detroit, Michigan, whereas the comic-books placed his birth in England.

In 2002 a sequel was made entitled Blade II. The story has Blade joining forces with vampire overlord Eli Damaskinos to defeat a powerful new breed of vampire called Reapers, revealed over the course of the film to have been the result of Damaskinos attempting to create his own 'Daywalkers'.

The 2004 film Blade: Trinity, introduced heavily modified versions of the Nightstalkers. Blade reluctantly joined forces with this group of vampire hunters, to destroy the first vampire, Dracula, who goes by the name "Drake", simultaneously using him to disperse a vampire "cure" that apparently destroys every vampire in the local area

2. Kirk Jones
A live-action television series based on the films aired on Spike TV and starred rapper/actor Kirk Jones as Blade. The series dealt with Blade fighting an evil vampire named Marcus Van Sciver in Detroit. As seen in the movies, Blade's birth name is Eric Brooks and his mother was named Vanessa. It is revealed that Blade's father is named Robert Brooks, and that he raised Blade until he was twelve and elements of his vampiric nature such as his "thirst" for human blood became more apparent.

Good Can you do Luke Cage, Superman and Blade?
[I'll do an article on Luke Cage, when we start seeing some development on that movie, I already have an article on Superman: [Superman feature]]

The BLUE BEETLE featurette

"When beetles fight these battles in a bottle with their paddles and the bottle's on a poodle and the poodle's eating noodles... ...they call this a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle." — Dr. Seuss (I'm saying it now sorry guys that the best quote I could get about beetles. =) )
BLUE BEETLE is visiting Smallville is a good time to know this CBM Character. This feature answers the questions - Who he is? What are his abilities? What are the changes he underwent? Who has portrayed him in Comic Book live adaptations?

Here we are again with another Legacy character. We have tackled legacy characters before with the Flash, just for a recap for what a legacy character is, these are characters who have used the name of their predecessor to continue to fight what they believe in.

Cool thing about BLUE BEETLE as a legacy character as oppose to the Flash, is that the BLUE BEETLEs doesn't really have the same set of powers and abilities with each other, nor they have any familial ties.

Who are the BLUE BEETLEs?
I. Dan Garrett
The first BLUE BEETLE is Dan Garret who appeared in Fox Comics' Mystery Men Comics #1 (August 1939). He was created by Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski. He initially appeared as a rookie police officer, who uses special equipment, a bulletproof costume and a superstrength-inducing "2-X vitamin". But In the 1964, Dan Garret got a revised origin, he was now an archaeologist who found a magical Egyptian artifact, resembling a scarab, which he used to fight crime.

What are his powers and abilities?
Without the scarab, he is a normal fellow with a strength of an athletic male of his height and build.

Calling on the powers of the BLUE BEETLE Scarab he gains:
Superhuman Strength
Unassisted Flight: Dan could fly without the use of wings.
Energy Blasts: This manifested as lightning bolts Dan shot from his hands.
Costume Manifestation

Changes in appearance
1. First appearance
In his first appearance in the cover of Mystery Men Comics #1 (1939). His alter-ego was Dan Garret. He is seen wearing a blue cape, with masks and carrying a gun. Later on we see him wearing a suit, a fedora hat and a mask. During his early appearances he fought crime without the aid of superpowers.

2. Vitamins
In BLUE BEETLE (Fox) Vol 1 #1 (Winter, 1939), a pharmacist named Doctor Franz provides rookie police officer Dan Garret with a special vitamin and bulletproof costume so that he can fight crime as the BLUE BEETLE.

3. Silver Age
During the Silver Age of comics, ca. 60s BLUE BEETLE got a revised origin, and his alter ego got an additional "t" on his last name, he is now known as Dan Garrett. His revised origin is an archaeologist who obtained a number of superhuman powers (including super strength and vision, flight, and the ability to generate energy blasts) from a mystical scarab he found during a dig in Egypt. He would transform into the BLUE BEETLE by saying the words "Kaji Dha!".

4. Modern
In the modern age Dan Garrett is the resurrection and/or reincarnation of the all the Dan Garretts in one. He was a secret agent and he was aware of his past incarnations. He believes that all his previous incarnations are past lives and that he is be resurrected when the world needs him. He wore the same costume as the second version of the BLUE BEETLE.

II. Ted Kord
Theodore Stephen "Ted" Kord is the second version of the BLUE BEETLE, a genius-level inventor and a gifted athlete, turned superhero. This version of the character was created by Steve Ditko, and first appeared as a back-up feature in Captain Atom #83 (Nov. 1966), with Gary Friedrich scripting from Ditko's conception and plot.

Ted Kord is a former student of Dan Garrett, in a battle where Garrett was badly injured and about to die, he passed on to Kord the responsibility of being BLUE BEETLE. The mystical BLUE BEETLE scarab was handed down to Kord by Garrett but unfortunately it won't work with Kord.

That didn't stop Ted Kord in becoming the new BLUE BEETLE, already possesing a genius intellect he went on to training himself physically to continue on fighting crimes. Without the mystical aid of the BLUE BEETLE Scarab, he turned to technological equipments to help him on his crusade, most of it is his own creation.

What are his powers and abilities?
Genius-Level Intellect: (IQ 192)

Gifted Inventor: Ted was the creator of many inventions and crime-fighting technologies, like his solar-powered "Bug" vehicle, BB gun, and many more. He also ran a company, Kord Industries, which produces hundreds of new technologies.

Skilled Acrobat: Kord was an accomplished acrobat, who more often than not, utilized this greatly into his hand-to-hand fighting style.

Martial Artist: Had studied with several martial arts masters, and can out-fight just about any group of thugs or criminals with his fighting skills alone.

Espionage Expert

Since day 1 (first appearance in 1966) Ted Kord's look pretty much stayed the same.

III. Jaime Reyes
Jaime Reyes is the succesor of Ted Kord in the mantle of BLUE BEETLE, the character first appeared in Infinite Crisis #3 (Feb. 2006), and was created by writers Keith Giffen and John Rogers, and artist Cully Hamner.

Reyes is a normal high-school kid from El Paso, Texas who by chance stumbled upon the BLUE BEETLE scarab of Dan Garrett. This time the scarab reacted and grafted itself in the spine of Reyes, and transforming him to the new new BLUE BEETLE.

What are his powers and abilities?
Without the scarab, he is a normal young teenage male who engages in moderate exercise.

With the scarab Jaime can access a number of powers at its own volition, an act usually accompanied by blue energy emitted by the scarab's "antennae". The armor is resilient enough that it can protect Jaime against atmospheric re-entry from Earth's orbit.

The suit can reconfigure itself to produce a wide array of armaments. Common functions include an energy cannon, a sword and shield, a grappling hook, a device resembling a communications satellite, and a set of foot-long powered blades that can shear through tree trunks. In addition, the suit can produce a set of wings for flight, which can also act as shields.

Jaime Reyes is relatively a new character so, he has not undergone many changes yet. Though I have to say he has one of that good design that may last a while. But even though he is the newest of the BLUE BEETLEs he is the first one to have a live adaptation. We see it here in the Live Action Test Footage. The clip shows Jaime Reyes' transformation from teen to superhero via the alien scarab fused to his spine.

And now on his Smallville visit, he is accompanied by Ted Kord's bestfriend, Booster Gold.

THOR : The God of Thunder featurette

“At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away.” --Psalm 104:7
With an upcoming movie its good to know your CBM Character - THOR. This feature answers the questions - Who he is? What are his abilities? What are the changes he underwent? Who has portrayed him in Comic Book Movies?

Who is THOR?
THOR is the Asgardian god of thunder who wields a mythical uru hammer, the mighty Mjolnir. He was sent to midgard (earth) by his father, Odin, to learn humility. In his time on midgard, he became one of its greatest hero, fighting in the name of Odin and of Asgard.

THOR is a fictional superhero who first appeared in Marvel Comics Journey into Mystery #83 (August 1962). He was created by editor-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller Jack Kirby.Debuting in the Silver Age of Comic Books, the character is based on the THOR of Norse mythology.

What are his powers and abilities?
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Superhuman Strength: Being the son of Odin and the elder goddess Gaea, THOR is physically the strongest of the Norse gods and one of the most powerful beings in the Universe.

Superhuman Stamina: THOR's advanced musculature is considerably more efficient than that of a human and most other Asgardians. As a result, his muscles produce practically no fatigue toxins during physical activity compared to those of humans and most other members of his race. He possesses practically inexhaustible stamina. He can exert himself at peak capacity for countless months on end at the very least without tiring at all.

Superhumanly Dense Tissue: THOR's skin, muscle, and bone tissues have several times the density of the same tissue in the body of a human being, contributing to his superhuman weight.

Self Sustenance: He is capable of surviving in the vacuum of space unaided and does not need air, food, water, or sleep.

Superhuman Longevity: THOR, like all other Asgardians, isn't immortal. THOR ages at a pace far, far slower than a human being as he is countless eons old; mortals' life spans are comparable to nothing more than a blink of his immortal eyes.

Superhuman Durability: The tissues of THOR's body are considerably harder and much more resistant to injury than those of humans. THOR possesses tremendous durability and is practically invulnerable.

Superhuman Speed: THOR's superhumanly strong legs allow him to run and move at superhuman speeds far greater than the finest human athlete. He is so fast, he is capable of moving at speeds faster than the human eyes can see.

Superhuman Agility: THOR's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are far beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete.

Superhuman Reflexes: THOR's reflexes are similarly greatly enhanced and are much more superior to the reflexes of the finest human athlete.

Superhuman Senses: THOR possesses incredible superhuman senses, as he is able to effortlessly see objects as far out as the edge of the Solar System, and hear cries from as far as the other side of the planet.

Regenerative Healing Factor: Despite his astounding resistance to injury, it is possible to injure THOR. In the rare instances that he is injured, his body is capable of repairing damaged tissue with much greater speed and efficiency than the body of a human being and almost all other Asgardians.

Master Combatant: THOR is a superbly skilled warrior trained in the arts of war with over countless years of combat experience. He is one of the most skilled fighters to ever walk the planet.

Master Tactician: For over thousands and thousands of years he has lead Asgard into battle against overwhelming forces with great leadership and employed strategies and tactics from every culture, including forgotten ones.

What are the changes he underwent?

1. First appearance
Since his first appearance Journey into Mystery #83. This costume designed by Jack Kirby is still the main driving force on THOR's look. Of course the costume has change throughout the decades, but most of the changes derived its look from this classic outfit. Elements of his costume are the winged helmet, the red cape, the metal discs on his upper tunic, and the strapped boots, which pretty much screams Superhero Viking. He has worn this costume since his debut in the 60s and throughout the 80s.

2. Battle armor
In THOR #378 (April 1987), THOR and Tony Stark designed a battle armor that will help hold THOR together after a curse placed on him by Hela made his bones as brittle as glass and unable to heal if damaged. THOR already broke his left arm so he has an armored cast around it. THOR also has to wear a mask and sport beard to cover the scars he has incurred on his face.

3. 1000 years younger
THOR #401 (March 1989), We have a story set in the past where a younger THOR accepts a wager from Loki to travel to Midgard, and join a Viking expedition to the new world. He will not have his power and will be unable to use Mjolnir. If he fails, he will be exiled to Midgard forever and give up all claim to the throne. He wores a more armored costume of his classic look, and he lost the red cape and gained a sword to replace his absent hammer.

4. Back to the Classics
At the tail end of the 80s and in the early days of the 90s THOR is back wearing his classic costume. Though there are times it seems that his upper costume loses the covering on his sides.

Enter the 90s
If you have read my previous articles about characters and their costumes during the 90s then you won't be surprised as much on the looks that THOR underwent.

5. Godpack
It was during the mid 90s THOR was running around with beings of his peer, the Godpack, and as always when you are among peers there will be peer pressure and THOR has to find a way to fit in, and he got this costume. Metal pants, spiked kneepads, huge shoulder pads, the silver discs are now replaced by yellow octagons and a helmet with a widow's peak. (Goodtimes) This costume debuted in THOR 475, June 1994

6. Topless
Maybe realizing the ridiculousness of his previous costume, he just said to hell with it I'll just show my abs. So most of 96 he was running around shirtless.

7. DC Crossover Costume
(THOR then decided…oooh I have a long hair, all I need are some leather straps and chains and I'm set to start my metal band. I hope Logan is good for drums. ) This costume was a little hiccup in THOR's history. One minute it was there and then it was gone. It did get some playtime during the company wide crossover with DC, where THOR fought Captain Marvel. This costume first appeared in the cover of THOR 502 (September 1996).

8. Counter Earth
In a fight with Onslaught most of the heroes were dead (don't panic its not dead dead but comic dead), what actually happened is that most of these heroes where trasported to a "counter earth" (see you can breathe well now, they are ok). The costume still has that classic look to it but now it has some added metallic studs all over the place. He seems like a Superher Skyscraper.

9. Heroes Reborn
The end of 1996 we have the aftermath of the battle with Onslaught. And we see the heroes returning with a new look, which did not exclude THOR. We now have THOR sporting yellow dots all over his costume. (I imagine a lot of comic book out there with smiley faces drawn on those yellow circles.)

10. Lord of Asgard
In 2001 THOR became the King of Asgard, after the death of Odin. He is seen with a more regal and mature look, which is appropriate for the position he was holding at that time. He once again sports a full beard.

11. Modern
Fast forward to 2009. Odin is back as King of Asgard, and we see THOR back in Midgard. He now brings with him and more sensible armored design to his classic costume which still retains his iconic silhoutte.

THOR in Live Media
1. THOR appeared in the live action television film The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988). THOR was played by Eric Allan Kramer. In this version THOR was a spirit that cannot be admitted into Asgard until he has proved himself worthy. In this movie THOR is portrayed as a fun-loving warrior who is very happy drinking beer, fighting with men, and carousing with women.

2. THOR will then next in his own Marvel Movie, out in May 2012. He will be played by Actor Chris Hemsworth. He will also be a part of the AVENGERS movie which will be released a year after.

Clint Barton: HAWKEYE the Marksman featurette

“As the Fletcher whittles and makes straight his arrows, so the master directs his straying thoughts.” --Buddha
Know your CBM Character - HAWKEYE. This feature answers the questions - Who he is? What are his abilities? What are the changes he underwent? Who has portrayed him in Comic Book Movies?

Who is HAWKEYE?
HAWKEYE is Clint Barton, He is a former circus worker and criminal turned hero, who received his archery skills as a young boy through extensive training with professionals. HAWKEYE is only one of his monikers, he has also used the name Goliath, he transforms into a giant using the "Pym" particles. He has gone also with the code name Ronin, where he showed his skills in martials arts and his efficiency with a sword.

What are his powers and abilities?
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

He has no superpowers when he is in his HAWKEYE or Ronin Persona.

As Goliath:
Size Alteration: Using the Pym Particles, created by Hank Pym, he can grow to immense size (and also to shrink to tiny proportions).

Abilities
Master Archer: Barton has trained himself to become a master archer specializing in the use of regular bows, longbows, compound bows, and crossbows with near-perfect accuracy. He is capable of firing multiple arrows at a single target in a few seconds, hitting multiple targets in a few quick strokes, and directly hit small targets in the greatest of distances.

Expert Marksman: He possesses very keen eyesight, and his accuracy is virtually unerring; he was trained in the use of throwing blades, balls, bolas, and boomerangs. He now has near-perfect precision with any aimed or thrown weapon. He can hurl objects with extreme speed and accuracy, both in direct aim and complicated rebounds/interactions.

Expert Acrobat: Barton possesses exceptional human strength, endurance, and stamina. He is athletic, with very good reflexes and agility. This, combined with training as an aerialist and acrobat, makes him capable of complex acrobatic maneuvers.

Expert Fighter: Barton is an excellent martial artist, having been trained in various forms.

Skilled Tactician: As shown in his leadership of the West Coast Avengers and the Thunderbolts, Barton is a highly competent strategist, tactician, and field commander.

Weapons Proficiency: Although as HAWKEYE he was not known to use the martial arts style weapons he now uses in his Ronin identity, Barton's incredible reflexes and hand-eye coordination allow him to easily master most weapons. Barton is able to properly handle and throw Captain America's shield.

What are the changes he underwent?
1. First Appearance
First time we meet HAWKEYE he was mistook for a thief, but quickly proven himself a hero, and became an important member of the Avengers. His initial costume is still pretty much the basis of his more contemporary look, with some minor adjustments here and there.

2. Goliath
In a story that involved a battle that broke HAWKEYE's bow, Barton took some size-changing Pym particles and became the new Goliath. His Goliath costume has some elements similar to his HAWKEYE costume, but emphasized more his musculature, and could be throwback design from his circus days. The costume started with a purple theme but later on there were some color changes.

3. Return to HAWKEYE
After his stint as Goliath he went back in being HAWKEYE the archer, unfortunately when he first returned to using the name, he forgot to bring along his classic costume and we get this.

4. Armor
A story about street crime, finds HAWKEYE got shot several times, after he recovered he began to wear an armored costume designed by Tony Stark with goggles to protect his eyes.

5. Crossing
The 90s came, and in the "Crossing" storyline we have a "cool" (which is the 90s mantra) HAWKEYE.

6. Heroes Reborn
After spending sometime in a "Counter-Earth" Heroes of the Marvel Universe returned to their actual reality, with HAWKEYE forgetting his color scheme. (HAWKEYE, Wolverine called he wants his brown and tan costume back).

7. House of M
In this event where the Scarlet Witch alters reality HAWKEYE is wearing a familiar, but slightly modified costume. (I'm not familiar with this story… sorry guys… but is it really suppose to be an M in his forehead rather than an H?)

8. HAWKEYE America
For a brief moment after the Marvel Civil War, and the apparent death of Captain America. Tony Stark offered Clint the mantle of Captain America

9. Ronin
Clint temporarily adopted the costume and name of Ronin. He relied more on his fighting prowess while donning this costume, using katanas and nunchuk, but old love never dies and we see him with a bow and an arrow.

10. Heroic Age
Recently, on Marvel's Heroic Age we see HAWKEYE back in his classic duds. (Well you know what they say you can never beat the classics).

HAWKEYE in Live Media
HAWKEYE's first live interpretation will be portrayed by actor Jeremy Renner. We will see him have a cameo in the Thor movie, then as a part of an ensemble cast in the AVENGERS.

We have reports that he will not be wearing the purple costume from the comic books. But, it would be a black sleeveless costume with a little bit of maroon. There is the HAWKEYE symbol on the chest and he carries modern professional bow. Probably similar to one of his Ultimate costumes.

Hey Pollmaster, I was wondering if you can do an "Ask A Geek" on HAWKEYE. I know that he has other alias' like Ronin, but thats about it. Id like to know more about this Avenger since he's gonna be on the big screen soon. Thanks.

Aaron
Could you do a history of HAWKEYE costume since there seems to be a lot of debate on it about the movie. If you haven't done it already.

Can you do 1 of HAWKEYE please...btw you know your super heros keep up the good work
